 TRANSMITTER/RECEIVER

The exhibition consist of sculpture, drawing, and installation drawn from multiple bodies of work. Reoccurring images from radio astronomy and neurochemistry create analogues for connection and communication on the smallest and grandest scales. The work touches upon the biological undrpnininggs of some of our cultural pursuits to connect the structures and processes within our bodies to those communication on the tallest and grandest scales.

Through metaphorical images, materials and processes the work in TRANSMITTER/RECEIVER addresses the flow of information into and out of our bodies, how that information flows, and how that information affects and is affected by our biology.

SCHEUNEN HEX-SCHILD

Scheunen Hex-Schild, German for barn hex sign, is a personal, contemporary version of a Pennsylvania Dutch traditional barn decoration. Although most designs were used simply to adorn barns, some functioned as “witch marks” to ward off unwanted spirits. This one acts to call attention to the activity within the barn and as a clue about the internal life of the artist. The six pointed star is comprised of 6 funnels ringing a central axis. The funnel is a personal symbol for the artist who sees it as an apt representation of the role of artists as conduits of meaning, channeling limitless experiences, facts, observations, and possibilities into concise concentrated forms. The funnel is open to and extends in many directions indicating an active and open interaction with the world. Other shapes and symbols arise through the overlapping funnels generating further meanings and associations open for interpretation
